Criticism the book "How to complete with foreign cloth" Title is presumptuous. It contains more authenticate information about Mills but less about handlooms Hand Spinning is the Key to complete boycott of Mill made cloth. No doubt hand spun yarn is not as strong as machine spun yarn, but that is no argument in favour of the latter. We cannot give up hand made bread for machine made biscuits. |

Good that you admitted everything. you should clarify your aim of celibacy to your wife. Also you should grant her permission to remarry if she so desires. In ease she demands maintenance you should ask her to go to the ashram. The real remedy to meet the attack of passions is faithful. adherence to one's work. |

It is immaterial if a thing taken for health is tasteful. But it is taken to satisfy the taste it does matter. Relishing of the tongue can be overcome by practice. At the stage of perfection one has no questions. Self-examination is good but it should be followed by efforts to remove vices. |

I am sorry in replying so late to your letters. I was busy trying to get India and Mahatmaji better understood in this country (U.S. A.). I have sent my review of your two books-"How to compete with Foreign Cloth " and 'Indian Cotton Textile Industry'. If it is not possible to publish them in 'young India' because of the ban on it, they may be published elsewhere: I have not received any copies of the second edition of my book "Economics of Khaddar".- Not heard anything from the publishers. My sympathy is with India and the Congress. I am confident that India will win her full freedom. |

It seems post is being received regularly now. Kanta writes about some revenue dues to be paid.- have referred the matter to Mahadev. I have gone through your translation and passed it on to Kakasaheb for correction . Your language and diction is different from mine. I would like to send my translations to you just to see how you would correct them. Some have doubts about the efficacy and usefulness of prayer . It is means to save and protect yourself from evil thoughts,It is no mean achivement. Your efforts in preparing a new spinning wheel should not be of the cost of your health. Building a new spinning wheel should only be for the sake of pleasuer. I saw your opinion about the confusion that a student faces. Any writing like this is bound to appear a little bitter and difficult to follow. But I have done my duty. Even now , you may write to me if you still have any doubts and confusions. |

Don't get impatient. Do whatever you can with easily available resoures. Your claim of trying to invent an entirely different Charka seems untrue. I don't have that capacity. I am doing only some alterations in " Gandeev". "There is some imitation of"Jeevan Chakra." I don't see any necessity of ball-bearings. You can forget about "Takli". Your efforts should be around your Charka. Rambhau must be improving . Take from him whatever work you can. Everybody is governed by three things (1)The impression from the previous birth,(2)The present atmosphere and (3) One's own efforts. It seems you are disillusioned with me. You forget about Chandradutt. We have to be contented with whatever God gives us. |

Narandas may not be free from faults but that does not justify your refusing to show him your diary. Shanta cannot be sent to her father-in-law against her wishes and eventhough it may result in her husband taking a second wife. Characters in Mahabharat may have been historical and wars might have been faught but that does not mean that Mahabharat & Gita themeselves are historical books teaching Himsa. |

Gandhiji, after going through the draft pages of the book made the following suggestions:- (1) The title of the book should be "How to compete with Foreign cloth." (2) The importance of handspinning should be emphasized. (3) boycott of foreign cloth- impossible without adequate handspinning which alone can provide feeding to hand-weaving. (4) Talcherkar's argument that machine-spun yarn is weaker than handspun yarn not acceptable. (5) Mills and handlooms are mutually antagonistic. Mills have come stay. They may get help from "Swadeshi" movement. (6) Import of artificial silk deserves to be objected to. (7) We can import raw-cotton from other countries. |

Your letter dated 20/01/1931.- Your reply has been received in time. The book will be ready in about 5-7days. I have not stated that mills and handlooms are supplementary to each other. What I say that as long as the handlooms are not in a position to use handspun yarn only, they may use mill-spun yarn. "A Charka in every home and a colony of handlooms in every village will be the order of the new dispensation."I have been requested to bring out the book in Gujarati also. It is being translated and the Gujarati edition will also be published in a month's time. I request you to write a few words by way of "Introduction" to the Gujarati edition. The loss of Motilalji canot be filled in. You have stated in your letter that I should not make use of your words written from the jail. If it is so, there is a way out. You will write a few fresh words by way of introduction to the book in Gujarati. My article "can India import Foreign Cloth?" is published just today. The English edition will be ready by 17th February. I have pleaded with the mills to reduce profit- margin and also improve the quality of their fine cloth. I shall be highly obliged to you if you can write the Foreword for the book, I am going to Delhi to attend a meeting of the FICCI on 20th February. I shall try to see you at Allahabad. |

It is difficult to give advice to a person who is in a hurry,- already riding on a horseback. However, I can say the following about your Gujarati edition of the book : The book is suitable and welcome at the present time. It is possible to achieve complete boycott of foreign cloth with the help of spinning wheels and Khaddar. The author had made a good endeavour to show this. The book also contains useful statistical information. The book will be helpful to those who want to understand the ethics of boycott. |
